The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was originally established as the Faculty of Science and Letters as part of Zonguldak Karaelmas University by the Council of Ministers’ decision dated December 12, 2005, and numbered 2005/9744. It officially commenced its activities following the publication of issue no. 26027, in the Official Gazette on December 18, 2005. Later, by the decision published in the Official Gazette on May 29, 2007, issue no. 26536, the Faculty of Science and Letters was merged with the newly established Karabük University. To enhance the effectiveness of its educational and scientific activities, the Faculty Board, at its meeting held on 28 January 2010 (decision no. 15-164), unanimously resolved to restructure the science and humanities departments into two independent faculties, thereby forming the Faculty of Letters. By the Council of Ministers' decision dated 28 July 2010, numbered 2010/777, the faculty became an independent unit; this decision was published in the Official Gazette dated 22 August 2010, issue no. 27680.
Following the decision published in the Official Gazette dated 14 July 2025, issue no. 32956, the name of the faculty was changed to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Dr. Muhittin Kapanşahin, appointed as Dean on 13 September 2023, continues to hold this position.
The standard duration of study in the faculty is four years. Students of the Department of Western Languages and Literatures are additionally required to complete a one-year compulsory English preparatory program prior to their undergraduate studies.
Since 2013, the faculty has been dedicated to training researchers in various branches of the social sciences. It has been offering a Teacher Training Program to students from different departments of the university as well as to alumni, enabling them to work as teachers in public and private educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education.
