HISTORY OF FACULTY

 

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was originally established as the Faculty of Science and Letters under Zonguldak Karaelmas University by the Council of Ministers decision dated 12 December 2005 and numbered 2005/9744, and officially commenced its activities following publication in the Official Gazette dated 18 December 2005, issue no. 26027. Subsequently, by the decision published in the Official Gazette dated 29 May 2007, issue no. 26536, the Faculty of Science and Letters was affiliated with the newly established Karabük University.

At the Faculty Board meeting held on 28 January 2010 (decision no. 15-164), it was unanimously resolved to restructure the Faculty as the Faculty of Letters in order to enhance the effectiveness of educational and scientific activities. By the Council of Ministers decision dated 28 July 2010 and numbered 2010/777, the Faculty became an independent unit; this decision was published in the Official Gazette dated 22 August 2010, issue no. 27680.

Following the decision published in the Official Gazette dated 14 July 2025, issue no. 32956, the name of the Faculty was changed to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Dr. Muhittin Kapanşahin, appointed as Dean on 13 September 2023, continues to hold this position.

The standard period of study in the Faculty is four years. Students of the Department of Western Languages and Literatures are additionally required to complete a one-year compulsory English preparatory program prior to their undergraduate studies.

Dedicated to training researchers in various branches of the social sciences, since 2013 the Faculty has been offering Pedagogical Formation Training to students from different departments of the university as well as to graduates, enabling them to work as teachers in public and private educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education.
