The book entitled “Students Sent to Vienna in Ottoman Archival Documents (1835–1893)”, authored by Dr. Fatma ERTEN, a faculty member of the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Karabük University, and Eyüp ERTÜREN, has been published by Filiz Kitabevi.

Based on extensive research conducted in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of the State Archives, the book is a documentary study that sheds light on the Ottoman policy of sending students to Vienna during the period between 1835 and 1893. The scope and academic contribution of the work are described in the book as follows:
“This book is a documentary volume that includes the transliteration of 80 selected archival documents identified through extensive research in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of State Archives concerning students sent to Vienna between 1835 and 1893. These documents provide a comprehensive framework regarding Ottoman students sent to Vienna, making it possible to obtain significant information on their selection procedures, fields of study, administrative supervision, how their needs were met, and the institutions in which they were employed after completing their education.
In order to conduct an in-depth analysis of Turkish modernization history and to interpret this phenomenon accurately, it is essential to thoroughly understand the strategy of sending students abroad. Therefore, this work offers a new perspective on the strategy of sending students to Europe through the case of students sent to Vienna.”
By presenting original archival materials in transliterated form, the book makes an important contribution to studies on Ottoman educational history, modernization processes, and international knowledge transfer. It provides researchers with valuable primary sources and offers new analytical perspectives on the Ottoman engagement with Europe in the nineteenth century.
Following the publication of the book, Dr. Fatma ERTEN presented the work to Prof. Dr. Muhittin KAPANŞAHİN, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Karabük University. During the visit, the academic significance of the book and its contribution to the understanding of Ottoman modernization and educational reforms were emphasized.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Karabük University continues to support scholarly research and encourages academic publications that contribute to national and international historiography.
